Tibau posts ninth UFC win by running over ‘The Tractor’ at UFC 130
LAS VEGAS - Nicknamed "The Tractor," Rafaello Oliveira is a big, strong lightweight. He met his match tonight against the beast of the division and got run off the road. Tibau floored Oliveira with a big left, brutalized him on the ground and finished the fight at 3:28 mark of the second round with a rear-naked choke in bout No. 3 of UFC 130 at the MGM Garden Arena.
"I think I proved tonight that I'm getting close to my peak," Tibau said. "I showed everyone that I can strike, that I can finish guys with jiu-jitsu and that my game is coming together. I'm becoming a more complete fighter every day and I know that I'm heading toward the top of this division. I love the UFC and I want to fight as much as possible so that I can keep rising in this division."
In the opening round, Oliveira held his own. Tibau's size advantage made no difference. In fact, he looked a little slow. When Tibau was able to close space in the second and move the fight near the cage, Oliveira got trapped in a bad spot. He ate a huge left and hit the deck. Tibau jumped on top and moved to mount. Oliveira decided to flip to his back where Tibau got the hooks in and tried to flatten out the fellow Brazilian. Oliveira made a big mistake by trying to rise off the canvas with Tibau on his back. That seemed to sap his energy and allowed Tibau to slap on the choke.
"I think he has some great combos and I didn't see his left hand coming," Oliveira said. "I took this fight on short notice, but there are really no excuses. I need to work on controlling my mind in fights and fighting like I know I can fight. I will be back in the UFC and I will make the necessary changes to my game."
Tibau's won two straight. He's still in search of a huge win to move into the top 10 at lightweight. The 27-year-old Brazilian is 9-5 with the promotion. His only losses have come against Nick Diaz, Jim Miller, Joe Stevenson, Melvin Guillard and Tyson Griffin.

Karyn Bryant interview: Reporter explains why she was comfortable during ‘Rampage’ convo
Add another chapter to ever present debate over females covering male-dominated sports. Much has changed since "The Patriot Missile" days with Zeke Mowatt and Lisa Olsen and yet for some it still hasn't. We can argue and debate Quinton Jackson's behavior during his UFC 130 postfight interview with Karyn Bryant until we're blue in the face, but there's no denying there still remains a sad group of athletes, media members and fans who have deep rooted dislike of females in the sports media.
Bryant joined DC and the Sunshine Man on ESPNRadio1100 in Las Vegas to tell us what she thought of the initial Jackson conversation, and the blogosphere's reaction over the last few days.
One interesting side note to the story, the cameraman on the initial interview was actually Karyn's husband, Wade. It'd be interesting to see what most guys would do if their girlfriend or wife were in Bryant's situation on Saturday night.

Under Sail to Mt Waddington: Ready to Push for the Summit
You may remember the story in frequency TSJ #8.2 about a group that set sail for Alaska's Mt St Elias with the goal of climbing and riding 18,000 feet back to the ocean. Well, the same core crew has set sail for BC's Mt Waddington--the highest peak in BC's Coast Mountains--to attempt a circumnavigation of the peak, summit, and ride some mind-bending couloirs along the way. Down to their last few days in the mountains, conditions have improved, and it's time to make a move--this just in from Taylor Woodward late last night:
"Steve and Adam are on the upper Dais Glacier in preparation for an ascent of the South Face of Waddington, possibly starting today. This will be an alpine style ascent, probably leaving the party on the route overnight for a 30-36 hour push.
Dave and Ryan are below Jester Pass, 3 miles from Steve's camp. The parties are in contact via satellite phone. Dave and Ryan hope to ride the northwest summit of Waddington in the next two days via the Angle Glacier.
Both parties objectives are on the same massif, separated by a prominent notch over 13,000 feet. Weather is improving. The last 12 hours has shown clearing, compared to the last five days of no vis and spotty precipitation. The weather window will remain stable throughout the duration of the trip. The team is expected back at Homathko camp in the next five days. I am busy at Chuck's place doing carpentry, bear watching and soon to do speed trials on Chuck's prototype power catamaran on the upper Butte Inlet.
